So there I was. Dropping my brother off at the UPS store. I pulled up to the store and let him out. Then I drove around the parking lot pointing myself the way out of the shopping center stoping at a stop sign right next to a late model Lexus.

Just as background information, I'm not wearing a shirt. The car is a 49 year old Dodge Dart with a discolored fender and black steel wheels. I'm also blasting some song by Green Day on a bluetooth speaker. My brother just so happened to be wearing a Czechoslovakian military helmet (only $20 on Amazon). Back to the story.

My brother comes running out of the store and he jumps into the car Luke Duke style and we begin to peel out. Then a guy gets out of the Lexus. He's a skinny man with a buzz cut and some sunglasses I think every Lacrosse player/ bro wears. He also has a name tag thing. He yells something at us so we stop peeling out and back up to see what he wants. We had to turn down the music so we could hear him. He was really angry and asked if we touched his car. Verbatim my brother said "No sir, we did not. Didn't even open our doors". Then he told us to fuck off and I told him to have a nice day. Then he yelled at us and said he had a picture of our plates.

Jokes on him. We have antique plates. Haven't had a car on them since 1965. And we have an old New Jersey plate on the front, also not registered to anything.

EDIT: Looked it up and NC plate DE-8616 is a current NC weighted plate on a 1997 F250 Superduty

And we didn't actually do anything to his car.

This must've been a sight to see.

So are you not running a legal plate? (just clarifying)

That's right. But it's legal in North Carolina.

G.S. 20-63(d):

Any motor vehicle of the age of 35 years or more from the date of manufacture may bear the license plates of the year of manufacture instead of the current registration plates, if the current registration plates are maintained within the vehicle and produced upon the request of any person.

you still need to probably register the plates to the car. I just did this on my 68 camaro. I had to take the vintage plates in, they checked to see if they are ok to run, then issue a special interest tag(like a yearly tag) I now never have to pay for registration again but my registration shows the current plate.

What state are you in? NC just says this:

Any motor vehicle of the age of 35 years or more from the date of manufacture may bear the license plates of the year of manufacture instead of the current registration plates, if the current registration plates are maintained within the vehicle and produced upon the request of any person.

Oregon its been this way since the late 70s on running vintage plates. Oh the rule makes more sense after I read it a few times. You can run the vintage plate if you keep current registered plates in the car

Was it a Lexus ES? Because that will make this funnier. That car is not even worth the Lexus badge.

So you're driving without a shirt, blasting music and your brother's wearing military gear while jumping into your car, and you peel out, and somehow, this is about the Lexus ? Que....?

Yeah. I have a regular passenger plate under the seat, still in the wax paper envelope. I only touch it to change the sticker once a year.

My only local toll road is based solely off license plate pictures so I get to use it for free. It's also 15 miles of highway that is always completely empty because there is a non toll state route that runs parallel.

that's not bad, good ol Oregon likes to mess with vintage car people it seems. It's a state that requires a front plate, even on old cars, pre 36 can run one plate. I go to vintage plates and I'm only issued one tag for special interest. So technically I only have to run 1 plate but a cop having a bad day can pull you over for no front plate.
